The nominations for the 2025 Oscars are knocking at the door and I had the pleasure to chat with director Malin Ingrid Johansson who has a film who made the shortlist for Best Live-Action Short. Malin Ingrid Johansson’s OSCAR® Qualified DECK 5B shares a profound story about the conflict of longing versus a mother’s duty.

"Malin Ingrid Johansson’s Swedish short drama DECK 5B (DÄCK 5B) tells a heart-rending tale about a mother torn between duty and desire. We meet recently divorced Mia (Alma Pöysti), along with her son, as she heads for her first holiday together with her new love, but complications soon arise when Mia’s yearning to relax and let her hair down comes into conflict with her parental responsibilities. This gripping short premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival where it claimed the Best International Short Film award, thereby qualifying it for the 2025 Oscars®.


A mother full of desire, on the parking deck of a ferry is forced to make a choice between her parental duty and the love she’s been waiting for.


Director Malin Ingrid Johansson was born and raised on a farm in the Swedish countryside and might be one of the few directors who knows how to operate a tractor as well as a camera. Malin’s previous short MADDEN premiered internationally at the Berlinale ‘23, claiming multiple awards at various international film festivals. Highlights include ‘Best National Short’ at Gothenburg Film Festival, ‘Best National Short’ at Uppsala Kortfilmfestival and a ‘Special Mention for Best Acting’ at AFI Fest.


Producer Joel Rostmark is a co-founder of the Stockholm-based production company Pine alongside Adam Holmström. Joel was a producer for MADDEN directed by Malin Ingrid Johansson, OUR BROKEN HEART which screened at Snowdance and FAVOURS which played at Gothenburg Film Festival and got a Special Mention at Palm Springs. Pine collaborates with talented directors across the Nordic region, focusing on short and feature films.


Lead actress Alma Pöysti is an acclaimed Finnish actor who has made significant strides in Scandinavian cinema, earning accolades such as ‘Best Actress’ at the Finnish Film Awards for her role in TOVE and ‘Best Actress’ at the 2023 Gothenburg Film Festival for FOUR LITTLE ADULTS. Her recent works includes lead roles in Netflix’s A DAY AND A HALF and Aki Kaurismäki’s Cannes Film Festival’s Prix du Jury winner FALLEN LEAVES, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.


This stunning short has qualified for the 2025 Oscars®."
